I received a speeding ticket near Springfield, MA. I am a NYS resident and am not sure if it is worth fighting the ticket as NYS does not add points for out of state tickets. I was also wondering what the difference between a civil and criminal traffic violation is in the state of MA.
Thank you
I would suggest that you contest the ticket if you have no or limited driving history. Even if NY does not add points for out of state tickets, both states are part of the Driver’s License Compact and have reciprocity by notifying either state when you’re found responsible or guilty of a motor vehicle infraction. You should seek a local attorney in Hampshire County who has experience in the Court where the hearing would take place.
As for your second inquiry, there’s a wide variety of different statutes related to motor vehicle infractions, depending on the moving violation and penalty is what separates the criminal versus civil. Hopefully that answered your questions.
