I got caught doing 64 in a 45. I am only 16 and have only had my licence for 3 weeks. What is the best way to fight this ticket and keep my insurance rate from going up?
Goodafternoon. You may be able to take a new driver’s course called “StreetSafe.” Many districts dismiss first-time speeding offenders once they finish this course. I believe it is offerred in Alamance. Visit streetsafeus.com for more information.
Peter Lamm here. As mentioned below, Street Safe is offered in Alamance County. It’s a class that you can take in person on a Saturday throughout North Carolina. If you complete the class and provide the original certificate, the charge will be dismissed keeping your record clean. The DA may not offer it to you unless you have an attorney. Please feel free to contact me at 336-379-1852 or check out my website at www.lamm-law.com. Assuming that the information is as you have mentioned, the attorney fee would be $75 and you would never have to go to court.

Several legal options exist to minimize the consequences. You can as stated above get a reduction to 54/ 45. It would be preferable however to get an improper equipment plea if you have not had such a plea within a certain time period. If the state would accept that plea, it would probably be your best option. Another option would be to request a prayer for judgement. This will require a certified copy of your driving history which usually costs a small fee to get online at the DMV website. If you would like to discuss this matter further, my number is 252-269-6485.
