I am a resident of North Carolina (with NC driver license) and received a speeding ticket in Georgia (90 MPH in 65 MPH limit). Will GA transfer my ticket to NC or just my points to my NC driving record? Will my license get suspended in NC? What if I can negotiate it down to 74 MPH in GA? Does State of Georgia report a speeding ticket of UNDER 15 MPH to North Carolina?

Although the Georgia statute gives the clerk of court the option to not report a zero point offense like 14 mph over the limit, the Dept. of Driver Services will put in on your record if it gets to them. Then there is reciprocity between GA and NC through the Non-Resident Violator Compact. Based on federal law, some clerks are now being told by DDS that they should turn in all out of state speeding tickets, even if zero point offenses. You should hire a local GA speeding attorney to advise you on this murky and ever-changing legal issue.

Your ticket or citation will be handled through a court in Georgia. If it is a reporting offense, which means a speed of more than 14 mph or more over once the court case is closed on the citation, then it will be reported to North Carolina and be on your driving record such that North Carolina authorities can see it. If it is closed as a speeding for a speed that is 14 mph over or less than that, then it will not be reported to North Carolina and North Carolina will not be aware of it. North Carolina will not be aware of it until the citation is closed in court. If you simply pay the fine required on your citation, then it will be closed at the speed on the citation.j North Carolina can suspend your license based upon what is reported.
I have just dealt with a similar situation in another county. In speaking with the traffic clerk, I was told that all tickets (regardless of whether they get reduced to a no points violation) get reported when there is an out of state driver. Getting a ticket reduced to a no points violation in Georgia may not help the driver in North Carolina.
Yes Georgia will transmit that ticket to NC and it will suspend his license as well as affect his insurance rates. At that rate of speed he also qualifies for the Georgia Super Speeder law which means if he were to plead guilty the state would also send him an additional $200 fine in the mail. If you can send me a copy of the ticket I can see what we can do to help get it reduced.

The State assesses no points for speeding convictions less than 15 miles-per hour over the posted speed limit and for convictions of driving ‘Too Fast for Conditions’, as per O.C.G.A. §40-6-180. No points are assessed against non-residents of Georgia.
